Morphological Description

Oncoba spinosa is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Salicaceae family, typically 3–6 m tall, occasionally reaching 13 m in optimal conditions:

·       Stem: Armed with stout spines, 2–5 cm long, bark greyish-brown, fissured with age (Burkill, 2000).

·       Leaves: Glossy, dark green, ovate to elliptic, 5–12 cm long, 3–7 cm wide, with serrated margins (Fern, 2024).

·       Flowers: Large, 5–8 cm across, white with a bright yellow center, fragrant, solitary or in small clusters, blooming May–July (Barwick, 2004).

·       Fruit: Globose, 4–6 cm in diameter, hard-shelled, green turning brown, containing edible pulp and numerous seeds (Burkill, 2000).

Distribution and Habitat

Oncoba spinosa is widely distributed across tropical and southern Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula:

·       Range: Senegal to South Africa, east to Kenya and Yemen; common in Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe (Fern, 2024).

·       Habitat: Riverine forests, savannas, bushveld, deciduous woodlands; thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils, 20–35°C, 500–1,500 m altitude (Burkill, 2000).

Ethnopharmacology

Oncoba spinosa (commonly known as the snuff-box tree) is a medicinal plant with diverse therapeutic properties. It is rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and essential oils(Djouossi et al., 2015)., which contribute to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities. Studies have shown that extracts from its leaves and roots exhibit strong antioxidant effects, helping to combat oxidative stress-related diseases. Its antimicrobial properties make it effective against various bacterial and fungal infections. The plant also demonstrates α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities, indicating potential in diabetes management by reducing blood sugar levels. Additionally, Oncoba spinosa has shown pancreatic lipase inhibitory effects, suggesting a role in obesity control by limiting fat absorption. Some studies indicate its cytotoxic activity against certain cancer cell lines, hinting at possible anticancer applications. Traditional medicine uses the plant for treating wounds, fever, gastrointestinal issues, and inflammatory conditions, making it a promising candidate for pharmaceutical development.

·       Dysentery/Bladder Complaints: Root decoctions in Mali treat dysentery and urinary issues. Burkill (2000) notes its use for bladder conditions.

·       Antimicrobial: Leaf extracts in Nigeria for wound infections. Kamanyi et al. (2014) found compound 5 (MIC 8 µg/mL) active against Klebsiella pneumoniae.

·       Antioxidant: Leaves in Cameroon for oxidative stress. Djouossi et al. (2015) confirmed DPPH scavenging activity in methanol extracts.

·       Diabetes: Leaf infusions in Nigeria for diabetes. Prasanth Kumar et al. (2017) investigated the potential of Oncoba spinosa (OS) extracts to inhibit enzymes associated with diabetes and obesity. The researchers prepared successive extracts of OS roots using solvents such as petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and 70% ethanol. Among these, the ethanolic extract exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against pancreatic lipase in a dose-dependent manner. Kinetic studies revealed that this extract exerted mixed-type inhibition on both α-amylase and pancreatic lipase, while demonstrating non-competitive inhibition against α-glucosidase. These findings suggest that OS may reduce the intestinal absorption of carbohydrates and lipids, indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent for managing diabetes and obesity.

·       Epilepsy: Roots in Uganda for seizures. Tabuti et al. (2003) document its traditional use.

⚠  Toxicity Profile: Unripe fruit pulp may cause gastrointestinal irritation due to tannins. High-dose leaf extracts (>500 mg/kg) showed mild hemolytic effects on red blood cells in vitro (Djouossi et al., 2015).

·       Cultural: Hard fruit shells used as snuff-boxes, child rattles, and dance anklets in Nigeria and Ghana (Burkill, 2000).

·       Edible: Fruit pulp consumed as a famine food in Zimbabwe; seeds yield varnish oil (Fern, 2024).

·       Ornamental: Planted for its striking flowers in gardens; wood used for small crafts (Barwick, 2004).
