About the compound:

N-nonane appears as a clear colorless liquid with a sharp odor. Flash point 86 °F. Insoluble in water and less dense than water. Contact may irritate eyes and possibly injury the cornea. May irritate skin. Vapor inhalation may cause irritation. Prolonged inhalation may lead to breathing difficulty. Ingestion causes abdominal discomfort, nausea and diarrhea. Nonane is a linear alkane hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C9H20. It is a colorless, flammable liquid, occurring primarily in the component of the petroleum distillate fraction commonly called kerosene, which is used as a heating, tractor, and jet fuel.[4] Nonane is also used as a solvent, distillation chaser, fuel additive, and a component in biodegradable detergents.[5]

First Aid

EYES: If contact lenses are present, remove them and flush the eyes with water or saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes. Seek medical assistance immediately and transport the victim to a hospital, even if no symptoms develop.

SKIN: Immediately wash the affected skin with water, removing contaminated clothing. Thoroughly cleanse the skin with soap and water. If redness or irritation occurs, contact a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital.

INHALATION: Move to fresh air immediately. If symptoms such as wheezing or shortness of breath occur, seek medical attention. Use appropriate respiratory protection for rescue efforts. If needed, transport the victim to a hospital.

INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. If the victim is conscious, give 1 or 2 glasses of water and seek medical advice. If the victim is unconscious, ensure an open airway and transport to a hospital without inducing vomiting (NTP, 1992)
