About the compound: | Icosane, alternatively spelled eicosane, is an alkane with the molecular formula C20H42. This compound has a significant number of constitutional isomers, totaling 366,319. In the petrochemical industry, icosane has limited applications due to its high flash point, which renders it an inefficient fuel. The straight-chain structural isomer of icosane, known as n-icosane, is the shortest compound found in paraffin waxes, which are commonly used in candle making. Despite its size and chemical inactivity, icosane shares similar properties with its smaller alkane counterparts. It is a colorless and non-polar molecule, almost entirely unreactive except when undergoing combustion. Icosane has a lower density than water and is insoluble in it. Due to its non-polar nature, icosane can only engage in weak intermolecular bonding, such as hydrophobic interactions and van der Waals forces. One notable property of icosane is its phase transition at moderate temperatures, making it a potential candidate as a phase change material (PCM). As a PCM, it can be utilized for storing thermal energy and controlling temperature. Interestingly, icosane can be detected in the body odor of individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease, indicating a potential role in medical diagnostics or research related to this condition.
