About the compound:

Citral is a natural product found in Nepetanepetella, Curcuma amada, and other organisms. Citral, also known as 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal, is a prominent aroma compound that can be found in several essential oils. The highest concentrations can be found in lemongrass (Cymbopogoncitratus), lemon myrtle, lemon tea-tree oils, and lemon verbena. It's also found, but in smaller amounts, in the oils of citrus fruits. Due to its strong lemon aroma, citral is widely used in the fragrance industry to give perfumes a citrusy note. It's also used in the flavor industry to add lemon flavoring to food products, beverages, and candies. Certain studies have shown that citral can be effective as a natural insect repellent. Citral is an acyclic monoterpene aldehyde. Being a monoterpene, it is made of two isoprene units. Citral is used in the synthesis of vitamin A, lycopene, ionone and methylionone, and to mask the smell of smoke.
