About the compound: | EGCG is one of the catechins, a type of natural phenol and antioxidant. Its structure consists of two aromatic rings (known as the A and B rings) with a dihydroxy structure in the B ring, and a gallate ester attached at the 3-position of the C ring, which is responsible for most of its antioxidant activity. EGCG is primarily found in green tea. The Camellia sinensis plant, from which green tea is derived, has a high concentration of catechins, with EGCG being the most abundant and potent among them. Smaller amounts of EGCG can also be found in other foods and plants, but green tea remains the primary source. EGCG has been researched extensively for its potential health benefits. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. Some studies suggest that EGCG can help increase metabolic rate in the short term, which may aid in weight loss.
